Mountanos Family Coffee & Tea Co. is the result of two determined Greek brothers who hit the streets of a post-Gold Rush San Francisco, California, in pursuit of the American dream. Selling their first pound of roasted coffee in 1898 from a mule-drawn cart on a bustling Market Street, Stratis and Richard Mountanos quickly learned how a passion for excellence—and a great cup of coffee—earned not just a loyal customer, but also a fast friend. Five generations later, we’re still a family owned and operated business; we’re still obsessing over the perfect roast; and as chance would have it, we’ve discovered a penchant for sourcing the world’s best premium teas, too. Above all, we continue to make friends with every cup. To ensure the highest quality, we are unwavering in our commitment to the following principles:
We find the world’s freshest, finest, raw and green Arabica beans—mild, flavorful, and meticulously harvested by farmers in the best coffee-growing regions in the world.
After testing every available roasting device, we decided on the Jabez Burns Jubilee Roaster, which, after a few proprietary modifications, delivered the result we demanded—a sweet, full-bodied, clean-tasting coffee, bursting with the full flavor of the bean.
Every bean requires its own unique roasting process. Great attention to time and temperature is given to enhance each coffee’s unique aroma, body, and flavor. We know that your customers can and will taste the difference.
Before we commit to a purchase, we roast the beans in small batches, brew, and taste. Then we do it all over again to ensure that our roasting techniques are consistent and impeccable.
A successful roast relies on the “feel” and tasting abilities of the roastmaster. The Mountanos name is renowned as one of the best names in roasting in the country. You don’t get a second chance at making it perfect so we do it the first time.
Whether we talk by phone or enjoy a cup of your favorite roast at our Petaluma facility, we want to exceed your expectations. Our goal is to create relationships that endure. It’s what we’ve been doing for 100+ years.
